  1. Just when you thought things in the Aberdeen buttery scene couldnโ€™t get any more wild, @thebreadguysbakery goes and drops this madness. A buttery with cream and jam and then topped with another buttery that has been dipped in icing. Iโ€™m thinking what youโ€™re thinking, WHAT THE HELL ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿคช But now that Iโ€™ve tried it I can totally see why people would like it. Itโ€™s sweet and savoury all packaged into one and it all works incredibly well together. Iโ€™d love to see mini versions of this available on afternoon tea menus in the north-east, and after trying it, I donโ€™t think I could ever stomach a whole one - it is just too much for one sitting ๐Ÿคฃ A few nibbles here and there will do me just fine.   2. ๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡ณAberdeenโ€™s new Vietnamese restaurant @maisvietnamesekitchen is now open ๐Ÿ‡ป๐Ÿ‡ณ ๐Ÿ“Back Wynd, Aberdeen Mai Simpson and her husband Dave launched their successful takeaway from their home in Mannofield in 2021 and have now opened the doors to their first restaurant. I headed along yesterday to check it out, and boy are we in for a treat. The two-storey venue on Back Wynd is really cool and youโ€™ll be transported to the streets of Hanoi, Vietnam as soon as you step inside. Not only was the food delicious, weโ€™ll get into that in a just a minute, but the attention to detail throughout the restaurant is admirable. Almost every dish is personalised with Maiโ€™s branding, and the tableware has been hand-crafted by a Vietnamese artist, too, which I absolutely love. Even the chairs and tables have been imported from Vietnam. The dishes we tried: โœจNem Ran Ha Noi Dac Biet Cua Maiโ€™s (Maiโ€™s special Hanoi spring rolls) โœจPho Bo Dac Biet (Beef Pho special) โœจChao Tom Boc Mia (Grilled shrimp on sugarcane) โœจGa Xao Hat Dieu (Chicken stir-fried with cashew nuts) โœจVietnamese coffee โœจComplimentary passionfruit and strawberry cheesecake I had no idea that Sundays are a lucky day in Vietnam, and thatโ€™s exactly why Mai and Dave decided to open yesterday. The team are so lovely and are working really hard to make things as smooth as possible but do remember they have just opened so be kind to them, and be patient. We didnโ€™t have long to wait for our food at all, but as soon as a table was cleared it was filled, so was incredibly busy all day. A huge congratulations to Mai and Dave for opening another awesome venue that is bringing more diversity to Aberdeenโ€™s food scene.   3. โœจCome try Aberdeenโ€™s new Filipino restaurant @kultura_aberdeen with me โœจ Boy is Aberdeen in for a treat thanks to the team at Kultura. Not only can you enjoy some of the most incredible, authentic Filipino food, but I am obsessed with the open kitchen where you can watch the chefs work their magic ๐Ÿ”ฅ This family-owned restaurant has just opened its doors, and it is great to see so many people flocking there already. We were lucky to get a table last night as we saw so many people get turned away โ€“ which, was the right thing to do as the kitchen were working HARD. The food itself was so full of flavour. We tried to order a good mix of things but with a lot of pork options, naturally we leaned into them after being recommended some brilliant dishes by front of house team member Hugh. The venue is owned by Diane Rivera, who manages front of house, and her brother, Romeo, who heads up the kitchen, and itโ€™s a real family affair as their siblings and parents are also involved, too. I was so impressed with the food, it really was brilliant, and despite a small wait (itโ€™s their first week so I was definitely not bothered by this) I can say with confidence it is absolutely worth trying out. The team couldnโ€™t have been more accommodating and the chefโ€™s, albeit very busy, looked like they were having a great time in the kitchen. What we ordered: ๐Ÿ”ธDLBโ€™s pork barbecue (marinated pork skewers) ๐Ÿ”ธLumpiang Shanghai (pork spring rolls) ๐Ÿ”ธChilli garlic pusit (crosy fried squid) ๐Ÿ”ธCrispy pata (succulent pork shank marinated, slow-boiled and deep-fried until crispy) ๐Ÿ”ธKare-Kare with crispy pork (Filipino stew with a rich peanut sauce) ๐Ÿ”ธBinagoongan rice (rice with shrimp paste) Just be sure to check if the food is coming out together or separately as starters/mains because we had a lot of food arrive at once which did test our tableโ€™s space capacity. Thereโ€™s also a traditional sari-sari store at the entrance of Kultura selling Filipino ingredients and snacks.   1. I said I wasnโ€™t going to do this but I feel that this marker is a kindness to myself and Iโ€™m still pretty disoriented tbh. Iโ€™m just out of hospital after the most traumatic 13 days I hope I will ever experience. I had a double mastectomy with flap removal from the stomach after finding breast cancer 6 weeks ago. Unfortunately the surgery took close to 20 hour then I ended up with sepsis from the drains and have been seriously ill as a result. The level of care I received from the Plastic surgery and burns unit was 2nd to none and the women there rescued me every day. My friends including my lifelong friend Melanie, Ellie, my wonderful boss Lorna and adopted granny Agnes, my brother and father were amazing and mother in law Linda. The love that I feel for my wonderful husband is stronger now than when we met 13 years ago. Itโ€™s very, very unlike me to be so open publicly like this but I feel like I want to write it on a billboard how thankful I am to everyone and how loved they all are. I have a long road to recovery still to go but Iโ€™m finally home. โค๏ธ

  2. Instead of putting up a photo of me in hospital hereโ€™s one of me and my BFF @bulstrode101 when I was about 15, duck face and all. Iโ€™m getting out of hospital today in time for crimbo with my wonderful husband and the kitty cats. Last of the surgeries for a good while hopefully until Iโ€™m healed. Cancer free, 2 semi normal breasts, a little corrective surgery still to come but 1% chance of breast cancer in the future so a better Christmas couldnโ€™t be hoped for. Thank you so much to everyone thatโ€™s supported me over the last few months and all the lovely messages. Time to take stock of how loved I am and how lucky I am to be here to love you all back. Merry Christmas my darlings, lots to look forward to including baking again, travel, renewing my vows to my beautiful husband and eating my weight in Christmas dinner โค๏ธ๐ŸŽ„

  2. Hello friends! Before I start sharing work for my next collection (and because I actually have nothing to show you yet, lol, hand sewing takes time!) I thought I'd do a hello/welcome post for anyone that's new here! So hi, I'm Nic! I would usually say I'm a fibre artist from Scotland, but this year I've dabbled in more mediums including sculpting & lino printing, which has been so much fun to explore in my style! The main thing I like to do with all the art I do is character design, however! Being someone that grew up watching cartoons, collecting toys and playing video games (who am I kidding, I still do those things), I would easily get attached to characters, and would love to spend any extra time I had drawing them. Not sure if I've shared this before, but when I was about 11 years old I had a concept for a computer game, a similar style to Tekken, but with cats ๐Ÿ˜… so from then I started off designing 10 main characters, which then grew arms and legs and I ended up having a folder with over 200 cat character designs, lol! I hope my parents still have that folder, it would be ace to show you one day! But that was my first journey into character making. Fast forward 20 years later, and now creating characters and creatures is all I want to do, and mostly in plush form!   3. Winged demon beasties! This is a new doll design for me, which I'm so excited about! These demons have button jointed arms and legs, so can be posed sitting, or standing (I think they look awesome sitting on a shelf with their little leggies hanging over)! They are completely hand-sewn, and decorated with hand stitches and needle felted features. Designing and making these were a test to my craftsmanship, and I'm so proud of the results!   2. A few days enjoying the winter wonderland that is Aberdeenshire, before heading back to the studio on Monday.   3. Some more wintry scenes over the last week. It has made the first week back to the studio more challenging, but I love the sense of stillness the snow brings. The feeling that nature is deep within its long slumber, resting until Spring blooms. The forests are quiet, muffled by the blanket of soft snow, the only sound is it crunching under your boot. It's never here long, I'm sure by the end of the week these wintry scenes will just be memory.
